First bouldering EYC of the year Soure, Portugal (2017)

First bouldering EYC of the year Soure, Portugal (2017)

My first European Youth Cup of this year was in Soure, Portugal and it was also my first international podium. This is my second year in category B and seeing as I made finals in both the bouldering EYC’s I entered last year I was hoping for a really good result. We travelled out on the Thursday afternoon, flying from Luton airport to Lisbon, Portugal. There was a slight complication with the hire car so we arrived at the hotel…

Demoing at YCS round 1

Demoing at YCS round 1

The first round of the YCS for South Wales this year was held in Dynamic Rock, this centre is only 45 minutes away from my house so we didn’t need to stay in a hotel. Like a normal competition we got up early and had a McDonald’s breakfast before heading over to the centre. I wasn’t allowed to compete as any competitors who are in the GB team and are in category B or above aren’t either. So I was…

Extending My Home Climbing Wall

Extending My Home Climbing Wall

In my bedroom I had a climbing wall which was overhanging by 30deg. This was really good for training at home and I used it a lot. But recently I noticed a lot of wasted wall space that was crying out for some climbing holds. My Dad and I decided to have a go at building a extension to my wall. Before we did any planning we spoke to my coach Simon as he had built our overhanging wall. He…

GB team selection

GB team selection

Earlier today I found out that I had been selected for a place in the GB team. I was so pleased when I found this out I had been really hoping for a place in the British team. See BMC website for announcement. I don’t really know what being on the British team is so I had a browse on the GB team website and found this: Benefits of being selected to be on a GB Junior team include the…

Ape Index

Ape Index

Last night I measured my ape index. I used a site called http://www.ape-index.com . I typed in my height and arms length. It then divided my arm span by my height to work out my ape index. My ape index is 1.051. My arm span is 7.5cm more than my height. This explains why all my long sleeved jackets and long sleeved tops are now short sleeved tops and jackets! A positive ape index is supposed to be good for…

Speed climbing hold

Speed climbing hold

When we went back to Ratho after the comp we bought a second hand speed climbing hold. We have just got around to putting the hold on the wall in my room! See the pictures below. When I tried it out it had loads of different parts to hold. Most of the parts were crap but one side was good. The circle sloper was not bad either.

Gaswerk Climbing Centre Zurich

Gaswerk Climbing Centre Zurich

When we were driving into Zurich we thought it would be a good opportunity to try out the biggest climbing centre in Europe as we were passing through on the way to Austria. We picked up a hire car and used Google Maps on my Dad’s phone to navigate there. We didn’t realise that data roaming cost so much in Switzerland and my Dad ran up a bill of 39 pounds in 20 minutes! We got to the centre and…

Trip to Edinburgh

Trip to Edinburgh

Yesterday I woke up at half three in the morning to meet all the the Boulders academy BMC youth climbing series 2014 qualifiers at boulders. Boulders paid for us all to go on a trip to EICA Ratho climbing centre in Edinburgh. We went by plane because we were only going for one day. It was so generous of Boulders to have invited us on the training day. This trip was organised to give the Boulders academy a chance to…
